Can the Cardinals Take Down the Mighty Dodgers?

Our second Wild Card game gets under way tonight. Cardinals Vs. Dodgers. The second best team in the league Vs. a team that finished the season on a 17-3 run. These teams have plenty of history meeting in the playoffs, but this is the first time the 2 teams face in a winner take all game. Any time I think about a Cardinals Vs. Dodgers playoff game, I think of Big City Matt Adams pimping a 3 run moon shot off Kershaw to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead in Game 4 of the 2014 NLDS. The Cardinals have always seemed to have the voodoo magic when it comes to beating the Dodgers and Kershaw in the post season. Unfortunately for them, Mad Max Scherzer gets the bump for the Dodgers tonight.

Kershaw not getting the ball in a must win situation for the Dodgers is odd, but for good reason. Max Scherzer has been his dominant self this season posting a 15 – 4 record and a 2.46 ERA. Scherzer, was born in St. Louis and went to Parkway Central High School in Chesterfield, Missouri. Max struggled in his last 2 starts allowing 10 runs in 10 innings.  Scherzer has thrown in 112 post season innings and has a 7-5 record with a 3.38 ERA. Mad Max will be facing off against veteran Adam Wainwright. While many people counted the aging Adam Wainwrights out this season, Waino has been dominant with a 17-7 record and a 3.05 ERA. At age 40, Waino still has shown he still has plenty in the tank, as he went 5-0 in his last 7 starts. Wainwright has pitched 109 post season innings and has a 4-5 record with a 2.89 ERA. Scherzer has the slight edge in ERA this season, but Waino has a better post season ERA. Waino has the edge in who is pitching better to end the season.

The Dodgers lineup is loaded from top to bottom, with veterans who have played in the post season before. Mookie Betts has 159 post season at bats and a .258 BA. Corey Seager has had 185 at bats and a .249 BA. Trea Turner has 116 at bats and a .233 BA. Cody Bellinger has 201 at bats with a .189 BA. Lastly, Justin Turner has 268 post season at bats with a .295 ERA.

The Cardinals lineup is redhot, with Goldschmidt, Arenado, and Tyler O’neil clicking on all cylinders to end the season. Unlike the Dodgers, the Cardinals stars don’t have quite as much playoff experience under their belt. Paul Goldschmidt has 82 post season at bats and a .280 BA. Nolan Arenado has only appeared in 5 post season games and has 21 at bats with a .190 BA. Harrison Bader has had 21 post season at bats with a .143 BA. Tommy Edman has 41 post season at bats and a .192 BA. Carlson has 9 AB with a .333 BA. Tyler O’Neil has 0 post season at bats. Lastly, Yadi has 361 post season at bats with a .280 BA.

It is clear the Dodger’s lineup has more post season experience then this young cardinals team. Justin Turner, Corey Seager, and Cody Bellinger have more post season at bats then the entire cardinal’s lineup (Minus Yadi) combined. But let’s take a look at which batters are currently hot. Over the last 7 games, O’Niel is batting .417. Over the last 30 games, O’Niel is batting .330. Over the last 15 games, Paul Goldschmidt is batting .340. Nolan Arenado is sporting a .255 BA in the last 15 games. Harrison Bader is batting .385 over the last 15 games. Lastly, Dylan Carlson is batting .341 over the last 15 games. For the Dodgers, Mookie Bets has a .194 BA over his last 15 games. Corey Seager has a .493 BA over the last 15 games. Cody Bellinger has a .184 BA over the last 15 games. Justin Turner has a .260 BA over the last 15 games. Lastly, AJ Pollack has a .262 BA over the last 15 games.

Tonight’s Wild Card game should be special for many reasons. 2 storied franchises facing off against each other. Albert playing against his former team. The second best team in baseball facing off against a Cardinals teams who is coming off a 17 game win streak. Two veteran Hall of Fame pitchers facing off in a win or go home matchup. Anything could happen tonight, but I am backing the red hot Cardinals at +1.5 (-111). All the pressure is on Mad Max and the 106 win Dodgers. No one expected the Cardinals to be here a month ago, and no one expected Waino to have this type of season. There is something special brewing with this Cardinals team, and I like being able to have a run in the back pocket. LETS GO BIRDS
