Rutgers Vs Temple Must Bet

Year 2 of the Greg Schaino experiment is underway as Temple Owls will make the 50 mile road trip to Piscataway New Jersey. This matchup brings a lot of intrigue and has already been announced it is sold out. Neither team had much success last year as temple went 1-6 and Rutgers went 3-6. Rutgers took a step in the right direction last year as they came away with wins against Purdue, Michigan State, and Minnesota. They also had one of the games of the years as they went wire to wire with Michigan into triple OT before falling short. Temple’s sole win during the COVID year came against South Florida. Rutgers returns all 5 starters on the OL and behind them will be returnee QB Noah Verdal. Rutgers also returns 9 starters on defense. On the other side of the ball, temple returns 11 starters and picked up 11 transfers. 9 of these transfers come from power 5 schools. The biggest of these transfers being Georgia QB D’wan Mathis. Reports from Temple’s camp have been positive about Mathis. In particular, they have been very impressed with his leadership and strength. Mathis is mobile and can sling the rock. The remaining Temple roster is a question mark due to the large amount of transfers.

Rutgers Vs Temple

Rutgers Vs Temple Pick:

As Carey enters his third year at Temple and Schiano enters his 2nd year at Rutgers, I expect both teams to improve upon last year. Both coaches have now had time to recruit guys that fit their system. First year coaches typically struggle because they inherit players that don’t fit their schemes. The difference between Schiano’s 2nd year and Carey’s third year, is Schiano returns a good majority of his roster. Carey added 11 transfers who have zero experience playing under Carey. Another thing taken into consideration is the location of the 2 schools. This game has large recruiting implication as many local recruits will be tuned into the game. I expect Rutgers to get an early lead and to pour it on late to make a statement. Rutgers experience will prove to be too much as they will establish the run early and often.

The Pick: Rutgers -14.5
